It’s time.
The 100 Words for 100 Days was an experiment. I wanted to do a soft-run of something I thought I wanted to commit to, but I wanted to know more about what that commitment would entail.
I gave myself 100 deadlines and met every single one. I collected data and read through it. I saw the signs. I acknowledge that I want to write and want to carry the craft with me deeper into my life.
Allow me to state my little life with you here:
I want to write. I want to be a writer known for heart, philosophy, and a love for words and people.
So here it is.
I am relaunching this newsletter as an indefinite project. Thank you for your attention and reading along the way during my trial run. It was a bolt of lightning, and I arrive at 2023 with that energy.
I want to share what you can expect moving forward:
Posts on Substack every Tuesday
Republishing on Saturday on various platforms like Medium, LinkedIn, and my personal site (coming soon)
Unique content only for Substack subscribers :)
Same and similar range of topics as the 100 day project
Same and similar length of posts as the 100 day project
My sincerity and commitment to writing and sharing the best that I can
One of the points of friction that I discovered in my 100 day experiment concerned the level of quality of writing. I think I wrote well, but the daily demand insisted that I move beyond posts when I felt they weren’t at their fullest expression, leaving some ideas unfinished or sounding just bizarre (I still stand by my Matthew McConaughey & Lincoln posts, however).
That is the reasoning behind moving to one post per week. Additionally, I think Substack has a lot of room to grow, and I want to build my project on a platform that pushes for innovation while still being easy to read.
I am going to prioritize Substack for this reason, and for this:
I eventually want to launch a paid subscription service, and I think Substack is the right place to do it.
Of course, more on this at the right time, but a nominal subscription fee would support me as I build and share ideas that are worthwhile. Posting once a week will give me space to develop my skills and depth of knowledge to bring this to bear while still experimenting (Books? Audiobooks? Podcasting?).
“It’s a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world” - Mary Oliver
I am also officially naming this newsletter.
Taken from the Mary Oliver quote on the newsletter banner, “A Serious Thing” gives me room to move from challenging and painful topics to philosophical and fun ideas.
As I frame it: the love of life and the art of thought.
Lastly, you!
I genuinely appreciate your attention and time reading. Even before I was a publisher, it was clear to me that a reader owes nothing to any writer, and so I take your time seriously and with significance. With that, I accept that I may not be for everyone and that tastes change. If you feel my writing does not add to your life, please do not feel any hesitation unsubscribing. It’s all good and nothing personal. I accept that anyone can leave (or return) at any time.
Still knowing that no reader owes anything to any writer, if you feel that any piece adds something worthwhile to your day, I would appreciate a simple “like” or comment on that piece. Not only does that help me understand you but it also helps communicate to Substack that this post is worth boosting and would help me find new readers. I would be very grateful.
Thank you, again. I am very much looking forward to this and the rest of 2023. Talk next week.
More soon,
Trevor
